A Roaring Cheer to a Good Year!

Year-End Remarks of Consul General Marichu Mauro
Milan, Italy

Consul General Marichu Mauro THE year 2014 has been a particularly good year for us Filipinos. After years of puttering along as the tiger economies in the region roared, our country has finally started to show some growl of its own.

For 2014 and 2015, our economy is expected to continue its robust expansion with growth in Philippine GDP forecasted to reach 6.2% in 2014 and 6.4% in 2015 according to an Asian Development Bank report. Also in May this year, the rating agency Standard & Poor's increased our country's long-term credit rating, making us more attractive to foreign investors.

The new rating is the result of stable politics and better governance. Revenue growth has exceeded GDP growth for the past three years, thanks in large measure to President Benigno Aquino's wide-ranging reforms. Once again, remittances from Filipinos like you abroad has helped investment and private consumption post strong gains.

Foreign direct investment (FDI), though still low compared with other countries in the region, jumped 77% in the first half of 2014 to €3 billion.

Business sentiment is generally positive according to a Central Bank survey and fiscal policy is expected to be even more supportive of economic growth in 2015. The government's proposed 2015 budget will increase spending by 15.1% over 2014, with increases for social services, infrastructure, and investment in agriculture, tourism, and manufacturing.
